I WAS distressed to read in the Okehampton Times (March 9) that the Okehampton Open Door Family Centre was to be closed down in May. Whoever has taken the decision to do so has completely ignored the human cost of the decision.
When I came to Okehampton with my two little daughters, as they were then, following the death of my wife, we joined the centre.
The people at the centre brought me a lot of comfort and friendship in the stress that I was in at the time. The same applied to other single parents and their small children. We all enjoyed each others' company and the facilities and the outings organised by the centre.
Everyone on the management of the Open Door Centre deserves our praise and it will be a shame to see them go.
I call upon all the parents who have used the centre to lobby their MP and the county councillors to reverse their callous decision immediately.
