Whitchurch played their first Tamar League match since May on Saturday, but it nearly did not take place, despite a fine sunny afternoon.

Part of the outfield at Gunnislake was still waterlogged and so a makeshift pitch was prepared off the square. This was always going to favour the bowlers so when he won the toss for Whitchurch, Mark Warwick elected to field first.

The Gunnislake batsmen were pinned down by some tight bowling by Kit Reeve and Graham Horler and it was not before the 30th over that the runs scored exceeded the overs bowled. Of the top-order batsmen Geoff Husband was out to a fine diving catch by Josh Sutton and only Ansell (11) reached double figures.

Late in the innings, Walker (14) and Veal (21) gave Gunnislake some hope with some strong hitting and the innings closed on 67 for 9 of 40 overs.

Graham Horler was the pick of the bowlers for Whitchurch taking 4 for 22 off 12 overs. Kit Reeve finished with 2 for 6 off 12 overs and Steve Woods 1 for 31 off 8 overs. Josh Sutton and Steve Woods both took two catches in a good all-round performance in the field.

In reply, Ewen Rae (15) and Neil Folley (11) got off to a brisk start for Whitchurch before both were bowled by Hugo. Andy Mitchell and Mark Warwick then saw Whitchurch home in the 22nd over, each scoring 20 not out.

A good win for Whitchurch, who adjusted better to the difficult conditions.

Whitchurch took 18 points and Gunnislake 1 point.
