AN ambitious scheme to dramatically improve sporting facilities in Tavistock has taken a step forward, following planning approval for an all-weather pitch at Crowndale in Tavistock.

The £1.2-million scheme would provide a rubber-crumb pitch for use by the community and Tavistock College students, plus additional facilities at Tavistock Football Club. The scheme is being steered by West Devon Borough Council.

But the scheme is dependent on attracting money from the grant-giving arm of the Football Association, the Football Foundation.

Borough council deputy chief executive David Inman said: ?We now need to do a revised business plan for the all-weather pitch and we will get that off to the Football Foundation in the next month, now we have the planning consent through ? then it?s down to the foundation to deliberate on it.?

Originally, the pitch was going to be situated on the college grounds. But because drainage on the school fields is so bad, it was decided to site the pitch on the other side of the road at Crowndale ? hence the revised business plan.

Mr Inman said although not quite so convenient for the college, to have the pitch at Crowndale was a strong plus as far as community use was concerned. There was also more space at Crowndale, which meant the borough was now planning a bigger pitch than originally intended.

However, the increased size means more money ? so the total cost of the scheme has increased by about £100,000.

Mr Inman said the Football Foundation would consider the funding bid in three parts ? regarding youth, Tavistock Football Club and schools and college use.

He said: ?The bids are in and have been in for some time now. They are regarded as having a reasonable chance of success and seem to be supported by the Devon FA and FA officials locally, so we are hopeful that when we get things moving again in a month?s time, they will go successfully through the panels.?

It is a hoped a decision on the funding application will be reached by March next year.
