A WEST Devon-based charity is asking residents in the area to get ready to 'Spring into Action' to help raise money to provide disadvantaged children with a break from their every- day lives. That's the message as the CHICKS (Country Holidays for Inner City Kids) charity launches the countdown to its 2007 Spring fundraising campaign in March. CHICKS fundraiser Nicola Bean said: 'We're asking schools and community groups to get involved by holding their own Hop Skip and Jump event for CHICKS throughout March, which could be skipping with a rope, jumping on a trampoline, playing hopscotch or any other variation on the theme, all to raise funds for CHICKS to continue helping disadvantaged children.' CHICKS provides free respite breaks for disadvantaged children aged between eight to 15 years from all parts of the UK. The charity is busy raising funds to pay for more children than ever to benefit from a CHICKS break in 2007. Susie is a ten year old girl from Devon. She has twin brothers a year younger than her and has witnessed her parents break up. Her mother is living with a new partner. Susie's mother and her partner are heroin users although they have been 'clean' for several months. Susie is on the 'Child Protection Register' and needs a break away where she can have fun and be around some positive role models. For Susie and the hundreds of children like her that are helped every year at CHICKS, monies raised by the spring campaign are vital, so anyone who can possibly support the charity, either by holding a Hop Skip and Jump event, or by making a donation, should get in touch.
