Throgmorton League Cup
Tavistock AFC 4
Vospers FC 1
UNDEFEATED Vospers from the Division One West came to Langsford Park with high hopes of causing an upset by beating a premiership team. The home team would have none of it and ran out worthy winners, although it must be said that the visitors put in a very spirited performance.
Tavistock started strongly and John Wyatt was soon in action on the right, but his cross was headed wide by Jarryd Kelly. Martyn Sullivan then crossed from the left but Andy Sargent sliced his shot wide of the target.
In the16th minute Jarryd Kelly went on a great run going by defenders before releasing John Wyatt, but his cross was inches away from Dave Hallett in the six yard area. The visitors almost scored in the 18th minute when a rare break into the Lambs territory saw a shot go over the cross bar from eighteen yards out.
Two minutes later the visitors received a real setback, when after a free flowing passing move in midfield resulted in John Wyatt racing into the penalty area, where the last defender brought him crashing to the ground. The referee had no alternative but to award a penalty kick, as the foul was deliberate to prevent a goal scoring opportunity, and send the full back off. Andy Sargent stepped up and rifled the spot kick home to give the home team a deserved lead.
The Lambs continued to attack and increased their lead four minutes later when they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area after Dave Hallett had been fouled. Andy Sargent curved his shot around the defensive wall into the top corner of the net.
The home side had chances to increase their lead, Ben Davies and John Wyatt combined well, before the later had his shot blocked, the ball fell to Sullivan but his shot screamed over the bar.
The second half saw the Lambs create early chances against the very plucky ten men of Vospers.
Kelly shot just wide after cutting from the right, he then had a great effort brilliantly saved by the visiting keeper. In the 65th minute the visitors nearly reduced their deficit when Joe Jasper shot was deflected wide of the target.
Although the home team continued to have the lion's share of possession, and created some chances, the visitors dogged defence remained firm.
In the 73rd minute Kinsman on the overlap sent a cross into the area, but John James powerful header was inches wide of the target.
With 10 minutes remaining Levi Landricombe returning from suspension, came on in place of Kelly. He was immediately in action and shot over from 25 yards out, before he had a one on one with the goalkeeper only to see his lob go just wide of the target.
In the 90th minute the Lambs increased their lead when Ben Davies showed great pace down the left before squaring the ball for Andy Sargent to score and complete his hat trick.
