The Herald Graddon Vending Devon Premier Cup Tavistock 3 Newton Abbot 1 THE skills of Lambs striker Glyn Hobbs proved too much for Devon League side Newton Abbot who had to concede defeat in this enthralling quarter final cup-tie at Langsford Park. Hobbs was a constant menace to the visitors throughout the game and even after going a man down in the 57th minute Tavistock still did not look likely to lose this game. Tavistock opened brightly with Jimmy Steer firing the ball across from the left flank for Shane Krac to turn sharply and place his shot just wide of the far post. Newton were looking dangerous on the break and almost shook their hosts as Shaun Friend's snap-shot hit Meeds who recovered to gather the ball at the second attempt. Steve Mason then fired over Meed's goal from the angle of the box but the visitors' revival was short-lived as Krac played in Hobbs to finish sublimely from the edge of the area. Ryan Honey had a clear shooting chance minutes later but he fire well over the bar from 15 yards on the angle. That was soon forgotten because just 69 seconds after the break the Lambs added a second. Hobbs once again had the visitors' defence in a tangle as his nifty footwork saw him work his way into space before despatching a low drive inside Matt Congdon's near post. Sean Cann should have increased the home side's lead but he put a free header over the bar from close range before the game erupted. Honey was fouled by Mason but unfortunately let his temper get the better of him, consequently getting a red card for retaliation. Hobbs' strength set up Cann but he sliced his hurried shot well wide before Newton came back into the game for a short spell. Darren Vicary set up Jason Heath to send in a fierce drive that forced a great one-handed save out of Meeds. Newton threw themselves a life-line 14 minutes from time when Ford fired the ball across for Broadway to lose his marker and head down past Meeds. Passage into the semi-finals was finally assured in the fourth minute of stoppage time as Hobbs cut in along the bye-line to beat his marker before firing low past Congdon from six yards.
