THE Okehampton and District Local History Society is to hold its annual meeting on Wednesday, April 8.
There will be no talk at this month's meeting. Instead, following the conclusion of the meeting business, there will be a social event with wine, buffet and quiz. Officers will be elected and members given the programme for the year.
In March, members gave an enthusiastic reception to Dr Todd Gray, a regular speaker at the society's meetings. His lively talk on carved bench ends in Devon churches, on which he has done extensive research and written a book, was illustrated by many slides which showed the difference in styles from one part of Devon to another. He has wanted to ensure that every church realised the value of these bench ends so that they are well preserved.
Meetings of the history society are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ockment Hall at the rear of the Ockment Centre. New members are always welcome and anyone interested should contact the secretary, Jane Lehni, on 01837 840087. Non-members may attend meetings at a charge of £2 per person.
