IN the centenary year since the start of the First World War, Year 4 and 5 pupils at Chagford Primary School have performed their own play about the conflict.

Monet Class, made up of Year 4 and 5 children, asked to learn about the Great War due to it being 100 years since war broke out.

The class have used local history as a starting point and made several visits into Chagford to find out more about how the First World War affected people from their town. The Chagford Local History Society were very helpful and spoke to the children as well as lending some fascinating material.

The children have also enjoyed researching their own school log books from WW1 and reading real letters sent home from the trenches.

The play's story begins in Chagford and tells the tale of six soldiers who leave to fight the war in France. They think the war will be over by Christmas but soon realise they were wrong.

The play follows events through the war both in Chagford and on the Western Front and some of the story is told through letters written by the children.

Monet Class expressed thanks to the many people who have helped them with their learning on this thought provoking and truly memorable project.
