WEDDING bells will ring out in Calstock next Wednesday when two of the village?s youngest residents ?tie the knot?. Five-year-olds Georgie Borrett and Josh Davies will get a chance to play bride and bridegroom when the school?s class 1 re-enact a typical wedding day. ?It?s as real as possible without it being grown-up,? said teacher Alison Nettleship. ?Local businesses have provided the cake, the car and the flowers. The children have chosen the hymns, order of service and menu for the wedding reception and we have a proper wedding dress, top hat and tails and bridesmaids.? A young vicar will ?marry? the couple with assistance from the school vicar Bob Monroe and the children will recite their own wedding vows and perform their own speeches. A wedding reception will follow at the school and a disco ? evening reception ? will be attended by the whole school. Mrs Nettleship said the wedding preparations had encompassed many parts of the curriculum ? numeracy, literacy, art and design as well as personal, social and emotional development. ?It?s been a real learning experience in lots of different ways,? she said. ?It?s putting excitement back into the curriculum and finding out about real life experiences.? The teacher added that it was made clear to children that marriage was one option in life but would not necessarily be the right one for them: ?They are learning what marriage means and the reasons for getting married,? added Mrs Nettleship. The ceremony takes place at St Andrew?s Church, Calstock at 1.15pm.
