PLANS to hold a major Help for Heroes fundraising day in Tavistock in March are taking shape with support from the community, local military and sporting stars.

On March 22 there will be a sponsored circular walk from Tavistock to Princetown followed by afternoon and evening events in Browns Hotel and Jack Chams bar.

The fundraising day is the brainchild of four ex- soldiers from the Tavistock area, who hope that the community will take it on in future years and raise lots of money for this worthy cause.

Anyone who has an idea to raise money for Help for Heroes is being encouraged to stage it on this day so it becomes a highlight in the town's events calendar.

Help for Heroes was started up in October 2007 to help support wounded servicemen and women injured in the current conflict. Since then over £1-million a month has been raised.

A number of Plymouth Argyle players have confirmed their presence on the day and will also supply signed shirts and club activities and Scottish and Newcastle Breweries have promised signed shirts from both Exeter Chiefs and Plymouth Albion.

Owner of Browns Hotel, Phil Biggin, who is one of the men behind the idea, said: 'The local military have agreed to be in attendance but have also supplied some rare, signed, pictures produced by David Shepherd — a distinguished military artist.

'We have received a spectacular amount of local support from people who would also like to run other events throughout the year.

A sponsored 'waxing' by beauticians and an event by the police community support officers will keep the flag flying through the year and clay shooting and golfing prizes have been offered for the raffle.

'On behalf of the H4H Tavistock team I would like to say a big thanks to all those people who are supporting us and to welcome everyone else to get involved,' added Phil.
