THE bravest pet in Okehampton will be chosen by visitors to Okeford Veterinary Centre this month. Every month from November 2004 to November 2005, the practice awarded a Braveheart Award to an animal in their care. These animals were selected by the vets and nurses for their bravery and good nature while undergoing treatment for trauma, injury or illness. Now the veterinary centre will give an award for the overall winner for the year and has thrown the decision open to clients and non-clients with an interest in animals. Visitors to the practice during January can see photographs and read accounts of the treatments given and vote for which animal they think is most deserving of the Braveheart 2005 title. The monthly winners include animals that suffered an infected snake bite, lost limbs, had major trauma injuries, severe cuts, even a dog who fancied a career as a mechanic, and so swallowed a few nuts and bolts. Staff say it would be very difficult to choose as all the animals were so brave, calm and uncomplaining, so they hope the public will take their time to cast their vote.
