A FREE project that helps people become more active more often is proving a great success across West Devon. The 5X30 project derives its name from health research that recommends individuals should accumulate 30 minutes of physical activity at least five times a week. The project has already succeeded in helping start new physical activities for adults including walking in Broadwoodkelly, netball and football in Hatherleigh, bellydancing in Northlew, aerobics in North Tawton and pilates in Okehampton. 5X30 has also been involved with seated exercise classes in residential homes and conservation in Abbeyford Wood. Another group the project has working with are people with learning disabilities, at the Puzzle Tree and Leaze centres. A group of youngsters from Chelfham School have been enjoying more than ten weeks of trampolining. The young men through their dedication have now gained national trampolining awards - Gavin Rough and John Chamer attained level 4; Sam Vernon level 5 and Daryl Morris level 6. Physical activity helps control weight, reduce risk of disease, increase energy and also has social benefits. Physical exercise can be incorporated into many areas of life through daily routines, dance, exercise, sport, play and travel. The 5X30 project can help to give information on a wide variety of activities that are going on in the borough. It aims to break down barriers that individuals or groups may have to becoming involved in physical activity. It also helps start up new activities, where a need is shown. The project has three funding areas that can help set up new physical activity opportunities, get people trained and also support initial access to a facility or transport. At this time of year, many people make resolutions to get fitter and this free project can really help realise those goals.
