A GRANITE seat erected by an Okehampton charity for walkers and cyclists to use has been stolen. The seat on the Granite Way was placed on the foot and cycle path between Okehampton Station and Meldon Viaduct by Okehampton Lions Club two years ago. It was made of two large slabs of polished granite, worth £200, which rested on a granite base sunk into the earth. Both slabs were noted as missing at the start of April. Lions vice-president Ian Snell said: 'We're really put out. A lot of time and effort went into putting the seat there and it's used by a lot of people. 'In fact, we'd been considering putting more granite seats along the path because so many people have asked us if we could.' Mr Snell said that at least two people must have been involved in the theft. 'The granite slabs are really heavy, you wouldn't lift them on your own. And the thieves must have taken a van up there to remove them. 'They weigh two tonnes, so it's not the sort of thing you'd just put in the back of a car.' The Lions are appealing for any information about the whereabouts of the seat, or for its return. Mr Snell said: 'It's probably been sold to somebody in the area by now as garden furniture.'
