THREE Little Piggies went to Oke — I refer, of course, to the skeletal iron piggies embedded firmly into the concrete in what used — before enhancement became the buzzword — to be St James's Street.
Far be it from me to complain, I like little piggies but, if we ignore for a moment the hazard they represent to unobservant pedestrians on a dark night when the street lights have been vandalised, there are just a few questions that I, and many inhabitants of Okehampton, would like answered —
Do the piggies have a meaning — historical perhaps, EC Directive?
What are they for — ornament?
Why do they face the wrong way — backsides to the main street?
Why were we — the inhabitants — not asked about this?
Whose idea was it?
How much did they cost us?
And finally, is it beyond the wit of our planners to direct some of this obviously surplus cash towards the town's most urgent need — a new hospital!
