Belstone v Hatherleigh THE first round of this season's 20-over Lancaster Cup competition saw Belstone entertain Hatherleigh on a gloomy evening last Thursday. Hatherleigh opener Graham Bryant was quickly into his stride, stroking three boundaries off Jonathan Parsons' second over as the score reached 35 after the first five overs. At the other end, Phil Dennis dropped onto a tidy line and length, clean bowling Cherrington and Cockwill in figures of two for 12 from four overs. Bryant continued to bat freely, adding 40 in 20 minutes for the fourth wicket with Nick Rogers (12), before reaching a run-a-minute half century off 46 balls. Wickets fell steadily at the other end, shared between Harry Bushin (4-0-15-2) and Andrew Paterson (4-0-28-3). Bryant was eventually caught off a skier in the last over having hit seven 4s in his invaluable 62 to leave Hatherleigh on a useful 115 for seven. Belstone got off to a poor start with both openers dismissed cheaply and only 17 runs coming from the first eight overs as the pace of Ian Jones (4-1- 5-0) and the accuracy of Andrew Fishleigh (3-1-8- 2) caused problems. Scott Tremain and skipper Paterson (19) led a recovery, adding 49 for the third wicket in 31 minutes so with the score on 56 for two in the 13th over Belstone were right back in the game — at the comparable stage Hatherleigh were 63 for three. Disaster followed for the home team as they lost five wickets for one run in the space of ten balls with Tremain run out for 24 and Rogers (4-0-34- 3), taking three wickets in four balls. Bushin (15) played a few lusty blows before Belstone were all out for 85 with seven balls remaining — their keeper Pete Gross being unable to bat after picking up an injury in the field — to send Hatherleigh into the second round with a 30-run win.
