HATHERLEIGH is now set for its carnival this Saturday. Money raised from this year's hotly-anticipated event will be donated to Cancer Research, Dartmoor Search and Rescue and Devon Air Ambulance, as well as other local charities.
The fun starts tomorrow (Friday) with local children pulling unlit barrels to Oakfield Road ready for carnival day.
Then the following morning at 5am the first blazing tar barrel run will begin. The barrels start from Oakfield Road and make their way to the market via Market Street, High Street, South Street and Bridge Street.
The Eggesford Hunt will meet outside the George Hotel at 11am, followed by the town criers' competition with Hatherleigh's champion crier Ros Chard.
The children's procession will move through the town to the market for the crowning of the royalty, who are Queen Jackie Entwistle, Prince William Bennett and Princess Anna Moyse.
The judging of the main carnival floats will take place in the market at 6pm. Shortly afterwards, Hatherleigh Silver Band will leave the square to help form the massed bands, which will meet the carnival procession at 7.30pm.
The procession will make its way through Market Street, Bridge Street, South Street, High Street and Hole Court to the market.
After the procession has cleared the blazing tar barrels will leave Oakfield Road for the market.
But the end of the procession will not mark the end of the fun, as fairground rides will be held in the market area.
