TOWN councillors are looking into proposals to produce an awning for the entrance of Tavistock Town Hall for special occasions.

The proposition suggests erecting an awning to 'brighten the entrance of the hall and make it look more appealing and welcoming to guests' said a report from the town hall manager.

It suggested that because the town hall is a listed building, and therefore a permanent fixture would not be permitted, a removable awning would be more appropriate.

The proposal was discussed by members of the properties committee and the idea received a mixed response.

Cllr Debo Sellis asked if there was truly a need for an awning on the hall. She said: 'I know if there is a ball or special occasion it would look quite grand but I seriously question the need for it.'

Cllr David Whitcomb said the idea was for a portable canopy; something that could be attached and removed on a daily basis to enhance the entrance doorway.

Cllr Brian Trew was in favour of the proposal, and felt the addition would help maximise the hall income.

Town clerk Roger Howard said: 'We are now trying to find a manufacturer to design what we want, and when we find it, we will put it to the councillors' vote.'
