YELVERTON Bowling Club observed two minutes' silence before the start of Captain's Day.

The game started with a 'spider' which was won by Gwen Dean. Despite using many ploys to distract the men they beat the ladies handsomely.

As the top players for club night were all ladies, the winner being Joan Smith, the men felt they were justified in winning.

All competitions have been completed and it was good to see Maurice Hellier, the longest playing member, ending up as club champion, beating Dave James in the final.

The ladies' champion is again Heather Lock, runner-up Joan Price. The men's champion is Ron Hunter, runner-up Vic Anstis.

The Govier Cup winner is Dave James, runner-up Marian Whitehead. Winner of the Centre Sports two wood competition is Ron Hunter, runner-up Henry Towl.

In the ladies' pairs, Heather Lock and Val Edwards beat Phyllis Hellier and Marion Southwell. The Hamley Shield was won by Heather Lock and Henry Towl who beat Joyce Neno and Roger Ley.

Joan Smith and Ron Hunter beat Barbara Hunter and Michael Brain in the Jean Terry mixed pairs. The Roy Stacey Rose Bowl was won by Phyllis Hellier, Barbara Hunter and Dennis Smith, runners-up Sybil Heathcock, Joan Smith and Ron Hunter.

Winners of the May Bank Holiday triples were Kath Bennett, Brian King and Dave Rugg, runners-up Kate Johnston, Margaret Sutcliffe and Dennis Smith, while the August Bank Holiday winners were Jimmy Johnston, Roger Ley and Godfrey Neno, runners-up Gwen Dean, Barbara Hunter and Kate Johnston.

The club has had a successful year, enjoying friendly matches, winning some and losing some. The ladies finished in the upper half of the second league. Next year the men hope to rejoin the Evening League.

Work on renovating the green starts immediately and hopefully weather conditions will be conducive to work being carried out.

The annual meeting takes place on Friday October 19 at 7.30pm in the pavilion.
