THE North Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team and the Okehampton Fairtrade Group are among the latest organisations to benefit from a grant from Okehampton Town Council.

The search and rescue team has been given £500 to go towards new livery of its new Land Rover.

The NDSART was formed in 1969 to provide voluntary mountain rescue assistance to the police and community. Since then the team's scope has grown, assisting the police and other emergency services by providing a search and rescue facility for missing and injured persons 365 days a year.

Cllr Terry Cummings said: 'The search and rescue team put so much hard work in and provide vital help to the community.

'Members are constantly on alert, they attend and help out at community events like Ten Tors and I can't see why not to give them this grant.'

The Okehampton Fairtrade Group requested £150 towards the cost of a Fairtrade Schools Conference at Okehampton College.

The group puts on events in the community to promote the benefits and ethics of Fairtrade produce and works hard to secure Okehampton's Fairtrade town status.

The council also decided to make a grant to Torridge, North, Mid and West Devon Citizens' Advice Bureau for £3,500 to support the work of the bureau in Okehampton.

The organisation is to launch its expanded Adviceline service in Okehampton on April 1. The service will allow the bureau to answer more calls on a range of issues and help even more people.
