STAFF at a leading tyre specialist in Tavistock are supporting a football team from the town on Sunday in its final match of the season.

Tavistock Tyres is sponsoring Tavi Specials, which is a team for young people and adults with physical or mental disabilities.

Tim Schmid, manager of Tavistock Tyres, which is located on Plymouth Road Industrial Estate in Tavistock, said: 'We have been Tavi Specials' main sponsor this year. We help to provide kit for the players and transport to the matches.

'On Sunday, May 8 several members of staff from Tavistock Tyres will be on the touchline at Crowndale Pitches in Tavistock to hopefully see Tavi Specials come top of league two in the Devon Ability League. There are eight teams in the league and Tavi Specials are leading it at the moment.'

Tavi Specials is part of Tavistock Community Football Club and trains at Tavistock Community College. The team now has 30 members, as well as six coaches.

Allen Lewis for the Tavi Specials, said: 'I would like to say a big 'thank you' to Tim and the team at Tavistock Tyres for sponsoring Tavi Specials. They often back my charity work and bonds with local businesses like this are great for community spirit.

'Being part of the club has made a huge difference to the lives of many young people. My own son, Paul, who is nine-years-old, has autism and Tavistock Tyres has supported him in the past. I followed with Paul the Son-Rise Programme and Tavistock Tyres has a display of information about this in its reception.

'The programme is a treatment for children and adults challenged by Autism, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), Asperger's Syndrome and other developmental difficulties.

'Other parents who have come into the outlet with their cars have been able to find out about the programme for the first time and are now looking at using it with their own children. After four years on the programme, Paul now attends a mainstream school.'

Tavi Specials' last game of the season takes place on Sunday, May 8 between 11am and 3.30pm at Crowndale pitches in Tavistock.
