GRANTS between £2,000 and £6,000 are up for grabs for projects within the Tarka Country area which includes north Dartmoor and Torridge.

The Tarka Country Millennium Awards are backed by the Millennium Commission with £750,000 of lottery funding and supported by 13 various agencies across the private and public sector.

The aim is to fund 130 not-for-profit projects over a three year period which benefit individuals and communities.

Anyone over the age of 12 can apply for an award that must fit into one of the three main themes — conservation and restoration, social and cultural and ideas for the future.

Projects could include events, displays, plays or exhibitions, crime reduction or producing sustainable products.

Chairman of the award scheme Cllr Derrick Spear said: 'This unique scheme will enable people who have ideas and motivation to make a difference in their community.

'In the wake of the dreadful foot and mouth outbreak I am delighted to see awards like this taking shape and enhancing rural areas.'

Awards will pay for 100 per cent of the project costs.

This could include training, workshop sessions, equipment or equipment hire, transport, accommodation, out of pocket expenses, childcare or respite care and mentoring.
