CARADON District Council?s move to slash a grant it pays to Callington Town Council to look after parks, toilets and cemeteries by half next year has angered councillors. District and town councillor Andrew Long said the town council was being penalised for being efficient and doing its best for the people of Callington. The district council voted to cut the £27,000 grant by half next year and then abolish it completely the following year. Cllr Long said he would be asking for a rate reduction to match this drop in income. He said: ?This is a blatant attack on Callington Town Council and its ratepayers and is nothing more than double taxation. ?It is penalising a council that is pro-active, economic and efficient and providing services at a far better value for money.? Cllr Chris Thomas, who is also a member of Caradon District Council, said it was likely to cost Caradon more than £100,000 to take the services back. Both members said ?headline grabbing? decisions by the Liberal Democrat-controlled council like the 10p one-hour parking charge would have implications for the residents of the district ? this being one of them ? in a bid to claw back some of the income lost. ?Stopping the parish grants is in fact going to cost them more money so they are digging themselves into a bigger hole,? said Cllr Thomas.
