A DEVON Action Fund grant of £3,000 is now supporting the research work of a community composting and recycling business in Chagford.

The grant fund was set up by the Community Council of Devon to help small community-based organisations access landfill credits. It is assisting Proper Job in Chagford in developing a heat exchange system.

This will build on last year's research work which focused on developing a low tech method for the safe composting of kitchen scraps.

The money will pay for research and development wages, materials and information.

The heat exchange system is intended to harvest heat from the composting process so that it can be used for the propagation of plants under cover.

Proper Job will be holding an Open Day on October 26 when the public will be invited to go along and see the results of research work.

The Devon Action Grant Fund will also support the construction of a shelter and storage area for timber and other reusable materials and items to the tune of £2,500.

Proper Job's Reuse and Repair Project is still in its infancy and reusable timber, windows, doors and so on are at present stacked as best as possible on temporary racking exposed to the vagaries of the weather.

The shelter will make it possible for Proper Job to collect and store a larger quantity of reusable items and materials than possible at present.

This will help to further reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill.
