A SCHOOL governnor from Boasley Cross Primary will be among those honoured at a special lunch in Exeter this Saturday. Barrie Timms has served 27 years as a governor at the village primary school — he is one of almost 100 long-serving Devon school governors with more than 1,500 years service between them to be honoured at the special lunch. Devon County Council will pay tribute to their dedicated service at the lunch at County Hall in Exeter. They will be honoured by the chairman of Devon County Council, Des Shadrick, and the authority's chief executive, Phil Norrey. The governors have at least 15 years service to the same governing body. Many of them have served their schools for much longer than that. Dr Norrey said today: 'We have well over 5,000 school governors in Devon and they play a vital role in the smooth running of our 367 schools. 'They are all volunteers who give up their time with no financial reward to help ensure our children get the best possible education and the best start in life we can provide. 'Their dedication often goes without recognition and I am delighted to be able to say a very public thank you to these long-serving governors and their thousands of colleagues across Devon for their contribution to education.' Devon County Council and individual schools are always keen to hear from people who would like to serve as governors. No specific skills are needed apart from an interest in education.
