The society organised three charity golf days, including one at Tavistock Golf Club, which were well supported by members and sponsored by local businesses.
All money raised from the golf days is used to sponsor puppies destined to become guide dogs. It costs £5,000 to train each guide dog puppy. Last year the Golfers’ Guide Dog Society sponsored a puppy named Mollie and members have been keenly following her progress. Mollie is now nine months-old and went to Plymouth Golf Centre with her volunteer trainer Lynn Moore, when a cheque for £4,000 was presented to the Guide Dogs’ charity. This amount, plus £3,000 raised and paid to Guide Dogs earlier this year, meant the total for 2015 was £7,000. As a result, the society will be able to sponsor another puppy and have the privilege of deciding on a name for it.
Jonathan Philpotts, captain of the Golfers’ Guide Dog Society, said: ‘It is really delightful to meet the puppies we have sponsored. We would like to extend an invitation to golfers of all standards to join us at our three competitions in Devon and Cornwall next year and we can assure them of a warm welcome.’
Guide Dogs is a national charity supporting people who are blind and partially sighted.
It receives no government funding and relies on the activities of its local volunteers and supporters to raise money, which is used to train and support guide dogs throughout their working lives.
