AN open tournament for teams of four took place at Tavistock Golf Club last week to help extend a link of peace and support to a rural farming community in Nicaragua.

Although golfers travelled from as far as Bournemouth to participate in the tournament, it was a local team put forward by the Tavistock Branch of Bristol and West that won first prize ? a golfing holiday for four in France, courtesy of Brittany Ferries.

The event was organised by Gunnislake-based Flight Of The Phoenix World Peace 2000, a not for private profit organisation.

More than £500 was raised on the day, which will help send a World Peace Garden Window to a school in Jicaro and convert a local building into a much-needed library and resource centre.

Replica windows have been installed in school and community buildings both overseas and in the UK, the most recent of which was unveiled by the Duchess of Bedford at Milton Abbot Primary School last week.
