TWO Tavistock charities have received a welcome boost from the Rotary Club of Tavistock, after its successful annual golf tournament. The club presented cheques to the Triangle Centre Chemotherapy Outreach Project in Tavistock Hospital and the Golfers' Guide Dog Society. Club president John Moreton said: 'We are delighted to support these two valuable, and some would argue essential, charities in the town. This year we have again raised over £3,000 from this event and hope that the community overall benefits from or efforts.' He went on to thank the teams of players, the many sponsors and the Rotarians who put so much time into making the day a success. Particular thanks were expressed to Tavistock Golf Club for allowing the use of its facilities, which over the past eleven years, has enabled the Rotary Club to raise more than £30,000 to support local charities in the town and the Tavistock area. The Triangle Centre was established to enable cancer patients to be treated in hospital near their homes. It provides information, counselling, support and complementary therapies to all cancer patients and their carers, thereby ensuring that a truly comprehensive service is available as close to home as possible. Lesley Gibson from the Tavistock League of Friends said: 'The overwhelming message we get from families is how important the Triangle Centre services are for cancer patients and their families and we are keen to raise awareness. It is only through events such as this hosted by Rotary that we can continue to keep services going.' The Golfers' Guide Dog Society sponsors the training of local puppies to become life-changing companions for blind or partially sighted people in the area. Jonathan Phillpotts, of the Golfers' Guide Dog Society, said: 'Like the Triangle we rely on charitable donations for support. For the first time last year we were able to pay for the training of a local puppy to support someone with visual impairment. Mainly we raise money through golfers who have shown they are very generous.' Captain of the Tavistock Golf Club John Harding said: 'We are proud to host the Rotary golf days here at the club and it is a pleasure to know that we are contributing in our own way to the Tavistock community and its charitable organisations.'
