THE centre of Chagford will be a hive of industry on Saturday, August 2 when the local branch of Cancer Research UK sets up the annual street market.
But not only will the street market fill the town centre, the event will be celebrating 50 years since it first began in 1958.
Through the years, the market has improved with more stands, more selection and more visitors — all resulting in more money raised for charity.
From 9am the stannary town will have extra bustle and atmosphere with stalls selling cakes, plants, books, baby wear, children's clothes, bric-a-brac and accessories.
The ancient Endacott House will also provide a welcome coffee break for visitors who can then visit the new clothes stall.
The Jubilee Hall will open at 2.30pm with the popular giant jumble sale.
The street market is the high point in the fundraising year.
Gloria Brewer, chairperson of the Chagford Cancer Research UK campaign committee, said: 'The whole event and all the others we organise are run by volunteers. Many have given years of service and some have been members since we started.
'The market is a busy time for everybody getting their stands ready with items to sell.
'It is a popular event and each year we see an increasing number of visitors to the town. We are grateful to the local shops for their support.'
Although a committee member for 46 years, Lillian Battershall still remembers the first market.
She said: 'In those days it was very small but we still raised a useful amount for the charity.
'We have been lucky over the years — it has only been wet twice.'
