PUB chain J D Wetherspoon were last week granted planning permission to develop the Crown Centre site in Russell Street into one of its back to basics pubs.

West Devon Borough Council planning officers took the decision under delegated powers to grant conditional consent for a change of use to a public house.

The conditions restrict the hours of opening to not extend beyond the period from 8am to 11.30pm, and require detailed plans prior to any work going ahead.

Wetherspoon property agent Richard Hartley, said a deal should be concluded in the next few weeks. He said builders could be on site within a couple of months, and the typical build period for a Wetherspoon pub was two to three months.

'Everything should be on track for an opening in the early to middle of next year,' said Mr Hartley.

A new Wetherspoon's pub generates on average around 30 full-time and part-time jobs and an investment of up to £1-million pounds in the local area to redevelop the site.

J D Wetherspoon was searching for around 18 months for a large site in Tavistock as it was keen to expand into the town.

Bob Jones, partner in W P Jones and Son, who run the Crown Centre, told the Times in July, that in the end Wetherspoon had 'made an offer which we could not refuse'.

Mr Jones also revealed that he hoped there might be an opportunity to find another site for a club to meet the needs of young people living in the town. 'We are looking for an alternative premises in Tavistock, but it would have to be away from a residential area,' Mr Jones said.
