OKEHAMPTON hairdresser Gill Davey felt compelled to help the Devon Air Ambulance after seeing it fly over Okehampton four times in a week — three months later she has raised £1,200.
Gill succeeded in her challenge to swim 100 lengths of Okehampton Swimming Pool which she completed last week in one hour and 35 minutes.
She said she was surprised how easy it was given that she had only taken up swimming again a year ago to get fit.
'It's down to Rob Aubry and Mike Reynolds who gave their time free to coach me,' said Gill, who swims two or three times a week. ' They were brilliant and I'm so chuffed I have achieved it.'
Gill said people had been so generous in supporting her: 'My target was £1,000 but I raised more because the Devon Air Ambulance means so much to people around here, especially with the moors all around,' she said.
'When I saw it fly over four times in a week in October, including the day Charlotte Saunders tragically died in the river, I realised just how much we rely on it.'
