A MEETING which could see the start of a fantastic new musical tradition takes place in Tavistock tonight (Thursday).

The event is to draw together any individuals and groups interested in helping to stage a big musical festival in Tavistock next year ? and to draw up a business plan for the creation of an exciting new community music centre at Tavistock College.

Both ideas are the brainchild of Peter Jones, musical director of the Stannary Brass Band and chairman of the town council?s finance committee.

Mr Jones believes the type of groups and individuals who would be interested in the music centre, which would have a modern recording studio plus rehearsal rooms and other facilities, would also like to be involved in the weekend-long festival.

He said the festival, encompassing all types of music, from folk to jazz and from classic to rock, could put the town on the map and ultimately become as famous as the big event held in Dartmouth every year.

And the music centre could create an invaluable community resource for existing musicians and groups, plus an exciting educational facility for young people.

Anyone interested in getting involved in either or both of these projects is invited to come to the town hall at 7.30pm.
