A GROUP of 40 organ enthusiasts led by Hans Hielscher, director of music and oganist at Marktkirche, Wiesbaden, visited West Devon as part of a tour of the West Country.
Herr Hielscher's group visited Buckfast Abbey, St Eustachius Tavistock, St Peter's, Meavy and St Mary's, Walkhampton.
The Rev Nick Shutt, Rector of West Dartmoor Benefice, said: 'They chose to visit West Devon because it is a beautiful part of the country and not only that, these knowledgeable organ enthusiasts love to hear the historic country organs that are tucked away in our Dartmoor churches such as St Peter's and St Mary's.
'Herr Hielscher was very clear that whilst the town and city churches do have wonderful instruments there is something special about visiting a small country church where real gems can be found.'
The visitors were treated to a cream tea at St Peter's, Meavy, and the congregation of St Mary's also turned out in force to escort the group to St Mary's by car or on foot as the Devon lanes are too narrow for their coach to negotiate.
Herr Hielscher played a short organ recital at both churches and has promised to return next summer to deliver a full recital at each church.
