THERE is a chance to see the landscaping work of Hatherleigh landscape gardener Tim Gladstone on the big screen this weekend, in the latest film being shown by Okehampton Moving Pictures. Tim spent almost six months creating a purpose-grown garden outside Pinewood Studios for the film Nanny McPhee, and got to meet stars Emma Thompson and Colin Firth. The film which tells the story of how the seven monstrously badly behaved Brown children meet their match in Nanny McPhee is the first in a new run of films being shown at the Charter Hall. Based on the Nurse Matilda stories of Christianna Brand, the children have just trussed cook to the kitchen table, representing their latest victory, having already disposed of 17 nannies to date. Their widowed father, played by Colin Firth, is at his wits? end, when Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson) arrives without warning and uses her magical powers to subdue her charges. As the children?s behaviour improves so does Nanny?s appearance until her warts are a thing of the past. This is Mary Poppins with a Roald Dahl twist. Emma Thompson?s performance is a treat and she is ably supported by a fantastic line-up of British actors including Derek Jacobi, Imelda Staunton, Angela Lansbury and Celia Imrie. The landscaping for the film was done by Hatherleigh landscape gardener Tim Gladstone. Nanny McPhee [cert U] is being shown twice at the Charter Hall; an afternoon screening at 4pm this Saturday (February 18) and an evening screening at 7.30pm. The following Saturday (February 25) will see Harry Potter coming to Okehampton. The latest film in the series of adaptations of J K Rowling?s best selling books is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which will again be given a afternoon and evening screening. Other films coming soon include the Oscar-nominees March of the Penguins and Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
