AN application to build a four-vehicle garage with a store and studio at a property in Tavistock?s Down Road area this week got the thumbs-down from West Devon?s planning committee.
Councillors at their meeting on Tuesday heard the garage, in the grounds of Treverbyn, a house undergoing refurbishment, would be almost six metres high and eleven metres long.
Officers told the committee that the proposal was not out of keeping with the size of the one-acre plot and that it would not be detrimental to the light received by neighbouring properties.
Barbara Chalk, who lives adjacent to Treverbyn, said she was ?delighted? at the refurbishment of the building, but concerned at the plans for the garage.
She said her home was situated at a lower level and the proposed garage would be equivalent to a two-and-a-half storey house overlooking her dormer bungalow.
?It appears to be an extraordinary size and not in keeping with the size of garages in this area,? she said.
Cllr Ted Sherrell said the ?sheer size? of the proposed garage would impose on neighbours.
The committee overturned planning officers? recommendation to approve the scheme, rejecting it on the grounds it was detrimental to the area and amenities of neighbouring properties, due to its size and height.
