A MEETING to discuss the future of film showing in Okehampton is due to be held next week, following a purchase agreement of the town?s Carlton Cinema.

Originally the meeting was to have been held last Friday but was postponed at the last minute, following the news that a buyer had been found for the cinema, just ahead of the auction.

The Rev Philip Wagstaff, who will chair the meeting, apologised for the last-minute postponement.

?In order to explore other options which would enable films to be shown in Okehampton in future, there will be a meeting to be held at the Ockment Centre in North Street at 7pm on Thursday, May 6,? said Mr Wagstaff, who thanked local people for their concern for the cinema.

?The Carlton, which was run by the Pope family for two generations, was very much part of the scene in Okehampton and many people have fond memories of going to see films there,? said Mr Wagstaff.

The art deco-style cinema, built in 1937, was forced to close last October due to the sudden illness of John Pope.

The sale of the building is being handled by local agents Kivells, who last week confirmed a deal had been struck in excess of the £200,000 guide price.
