ENVIRONMENTAL charity Westden this week announced redundancies and a move of premises, following the completion of several projects and a lack of funding for new initiatives. In the past few months, Westden?s Big Lottery funded Communities in Action work has been completed, the scooter loans scheme has been transferred to a Devon-wide initiative, the Sustainable Living project was wrapped up, and the international work with India has been transferred to local charity Tamwed. Work is continuing on sustainable business, rural skills training, climate change awareness and action, local food awareness and children?s holiday clubs. It is anticipated that the organisation will be launching new projects again in early 2008. Director Anna Kennedy said: ?Over the past few years, awareness of sustainability and the environment has increased greatly with more organisations working on these important issues. This, and reductions in funding available, have meant that we have been unable to continue some areas of work and the recent move of the scooter loans to Devon Wheels2Work, means our premises at Coryton are too big. ?Demand for Westden?s work is still high with many interesting projects in the pipeline. We very much regret having to make redundancies and are fundraising hard so we can continue working for the benefit of the people and environment of West Devon.? During the summer Westden will seek new accommodation for five office based staff and will reduce its administration. This will require some redundancies and some staff will reduce their hours while decisions on funding for new projects are awaited.
