RESIDENTS of Broadwoodkelly are celebrating the news that funding has come from two sources to help plan the refurbishment of the village hall.
With £1,000 from the Awards for All and £800 from the Community Council of Devon, the village hall committee can go ahead with stage one of the project which includes a structural survey of the building, disability access audit and design proposals from architect Allen Van der Steen.
Chairman of the committee Chris Oliver said he was delighted things were moving in the right direction, although he knew big money was yet to be found.
'The survey we conducted last year generated a host of ideas and demonstrated that the community was fully behind us,' he said. 'What we have to do now is carry out their wishes.'
Positive support has come from two new co-opted committee members who have offered to co-ordinate social events in the village, including the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations, and set up a working party to deal with building maintenance.
'We may be one of the smallest villages in Devon but it is amazing how much enthusiasm and co-operation has been generated within the community,' said Mr Oliver.
'We held a most successful antiques evening in the hall last week to raise money for vital maintenance work and this brought in just over £400.'
