OKEHAMPTON residents living with long-term health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, MS and arthritis are to be offered free support from trained tutors.

The Expert Patient Programme (EPP) which is run by NHS Devon will help patients develop skills, confidence and knowledge, as well as achieve the greatest possible physical capability and pleasure from life, despite living with a chronic health condition.

The programme is led by trained tutors who themselves have experience of living with a long-term health condition.

It includes relaxation techniques, dealing with tiredness and feelings of anger and depression and planning for the future.

It is hoped the course will lead to better symptom control, fewer visits to hospital and an increase in quality of life.

EPP co-ordinator Carmel Fanconi said: 'Our expert patient programme has been very popular and we have received excellent feedback.'

The course book is packed with information to help patients become a self manager of their condition and of life in general.

NHS Devon also runs 'Looking after Me' courses for carers who look after a person with a long term condition.

Anyone who would like to attend any of these courses can phone 0800 073 0792 or email [email protected]">[email protected]

All courses are free but patients are advised to book early in order to secure a place.

The course will be held on Wednesday, February 24 from 1.30pm until 4pm at the Ockment Centre, every Wednesday for six weeks.
