SUPER Sports Sunday will be the culmination of this year?s Okehampton Sports and Fitness Festival later this month, with Parklands Leisure Centre holding a free open day with the chance to swim, play badminton or table tennis and join a fitness class. Other activities taking place on Sunday, June 17, will be a five-a-side football tournament with separate mens and ladies competitions, hockey, tennis, mounting biking and a putting contest. Organiser Stuart Lord of OCRA said this year there were 40 different sporting activities which people could have a go at, irrespective of age and ability. Stuart said: ?The festival is now in its 7th year, and it has grown year on year with more and more people taking part, last year, we had 1,200 participants throughout the week.? This year, OCRA will be offering a water sports day at Roadford Lake for the first time, (Saturday, July 16) where you can learn the skills to sail and kayak. More relaxing will be the introduction to the Alexander Technique ? a method to help people release, relax and improve co-ordination and well-being. Two sessions are being run: in Okehampton College gym from 6-7pm on Monday, July 11, and at the squash and fitness club on Friday, July 15. The annual festival of sport gets underway on Saturday, July 9 and runs until Sunday, July 17. On Tuesday, July 12, Okehampton Community College hosts a netball tournament, and there is a chance to try tae-kwan-do, yoga and table tennis. On Thursday, July 14, there is an exciting mountain bike ride incorporating the North Shore Course in Abbeyford Woods, plus a rounders tournament. If you are tired out after all that exertion, there is also the chance to watch some top quality table tennis players as Riverside Table Tennis Centre hosts a ranking tournament during the week. Among the other activities on offer at various venues around the town during the festival are tennis, basketball, fishing, climbing, squash, skating, archery, fencing and tai-chi.
