THE week got off to a bad start with the scheduled Sunday match against Century Bowling Club, from Middlesex, being cancelled due to a waterlogged green, but then the weather improved and so did Tavistock?s fortunes with the men?s, ladies? and mixed teams winning six of the seven games played.

The Tuesday away fixture against a strong Mount Gould evening league team proved a tough test for the Tavistock men, who eventually emerged 76-67 winners.

Skip Eric Stevens and his squad of Ernie Piper, Clive Jago and Norman Paramor won 17-14, while skip Malcolm Bloomer led Der Saunders, John Smith and Brian Preece to a 25-19 victory.

Skip Roy Northam and his team of Lionel Sims, David Perry and Colin Tremaine fought their way back from being 2-8 down to lead 14-13, before eventually losing 17-18.

Skip Mike Allen and his team had an equally tough encounter, being behind from the third end, until the last end, when Mike picked up the two shots necessary to win the game 17-16.

Wednesday?s visit to Plympton resulted in an overwhelming victory for the Tavistock mixed team, who took the match 140-58, winning four and drawing the fifth of the five rinks played.

Skip Roy Northam and his team of John Smith, George Blackburn and Marlene Paramor achieved a remarkable 46-6 winning score-line,while skip Colin Tremaine and his squad of Norman Paramor, Val Southern and Brian Preece cruised to a comfortable 33-9 win.

Skip Ron Cooper ? ably supported by Betty Browse, Gordon Northey and Freda Isaac ? managed a 22-12 winning margin and skip Jill Lacayo led her team of Der Saunders, Wallace Northey and Shirley Blackburn to a 22-14 victory.

Skip Marion Allen and her team of David Perry, Joan Northey and Lionel Sims ended their hard fought game with a creditable 17-17 score-line.

Friday saw two men?s rinks contesting the early stages of the Foxland Trophy, which is a knock-out competition involving two rinks, one played at home and one away.

Tavistock won both rinks with home captain Mike Allen and his team of Pat Sykes, Clive Jago and Eric Stevens winning 28-18 and the away rink skipped by Roy Northam winning 19-16 thanks to his team of Tony Coombs, Colin Tremaine and Den Saunders.

The ladies? three rink friendly match against local rivals Yelverton on Tuesday ended in a 64-32 win for Tavistock when skip Marion Allen and her team of June Watson, Jill Lacayo and Marlene Paramor won 23-8.

Skip Yvonne Meneer and her squad of Gill Saunders, Val Southern, Betty Browse won 22-11, while skip Joan Northey?s team of Jean Flay, Wendy Bloomer and Hazel Lovell won 19-13.

Thursday?s two rink league match against Elizabethans ended in defeat when one rink lost 10-26. While Tavistock won the other rink they could only manage a four shot winning margin. The friendly rink played alongside the league rinks ended in a 18-15 win for Tavistock.

Friday saw the ladies face a Plymouth Hoe team in a friendly match which ended in an overall 40 shot victory for Tavistock, who won two of the three rinks played.

Skip Marion Allen led her team to a 33-13 win and skip Betty Browse steered her squad to a 35-12 winning margin. The third triples rink led by Jill Lacayo lost 17-20.

The ladies; two rink friendly game against Lee Moor on Saturday ended with skip Yvonne Meneer and her team of Gill Saunders, Betty Browse and Jean Flay winning 24-13, while skip Jill Lacayo saw her game slip away from her when the opposition picked up six shots on the last end to achieve an 18-18 draw.
