IN your August 11 edition you had a letter from a B Knapp about Sylvia?s Meadow. There are a number of mistakes in the article I would like to address. Firstly, the field in question was in my possession until about ten years ago, until it was passed to the wildlife trust. So if local inhabitants were using the field 60 years ago they were trespassing. We always keep horses in the field, which is why the orchids developed. We suggested this to the trust when they took over. After trying different management schemes they also found that horses or donkeys gave the best environment for the orchids. As for dogs being kept on leads, I cannot comment on how much damage they cause. I can say that I have had to stop walking my own dog in the field, due to the fact that my dog was attacked by other dogs who are left to run free. People should be grateful that the trust allows them to walk their dogs in the field, as this could be withdrawn if the problem persists. Elaine Jago Greystone House Chapel Street Gunnislake
