TRIBUTES have been paid to former OCRA chairman David Carter, who died on April 6.
David was a huge part of OCRA for many years, having been a key figure in securing the town's all-weather pitches and Pavilion in the Park. He fulfilled several roles for the organisation, taking the post of chairman, trustee and treasurer. He was also a chairman and coach of Okehampton Tennis Club.
To pay their respects to David and his legacy, OCRA held a buffet lunch in his honour at the Pavilion in the Park on Monday following his funeral in Exeter.
Stuart Lord of OCRA called David a 'true community champion for all sports and activities'.
He said: 'As trustee, chairman and treasurer of OCRA and as chairman and coach of Okehampton Tennis Club he worked hard to make sport fun and accessible for all.
'He was a true believer in sports clubs working together. His consistent hard work behind the scenes has been key to ensuring Okehampton has a new all-weather pitch, new tennis courts and the new OCRA Pavilion in the Park along with a whole range of other projects that have benefitted individuals and the community.
'As a tennis coach he has benefitted many young people through inspiring an enjoyment for the game.
'He will be a great loss to us as a friend, supporter, leader and champion of OCRA's mission to provide affordable sport and recreation for all.'
