DEVON?S folk arts development charity Wren Music presents a whole day for lovers and players of the fiddle: ?Folk on the Fiddle?, on Saturday, June 3, at the Octagon Theatre, Mill Road, Okehampton. During the daytime, there will be workshops for fiddlers and players of all other instruments, followed by an evening concert that will appeal to all lovers of good folk music. The event features four outstanding instrumentalists: Christina Smith (fiddle, cello) and Jean Hewson (guitar) ? since 1985, this native Newfoundland duo have dedicated themselves to the preservation and performance of the island?s music. Their long-standing friendships with the older generation of singers and musicians have given them a unique repertoire of songs and tunes that are rooted in the traditions of their island and its rich musical heritage. With their instrumentation of voice, guitar, fiddle and cello, they shape this material into unusual and engaging arrangements. They are both highly respected educators, dedicated to keeping the music alive for future generations. Nick Wyke (fiddle) and Becki Driscoll (fiddle) are two of the leading lights of the new generation of Devon-based folk artists. They play traditional and contemporary English music with a particular emphasis on tunes from the South West. Their arrangements of both new and old tunes bring together rhythmic chord patterns, flowing melodies and exquisite harmonies to create a rich texture of sound unique to this duo. They play with dynamic energy and passion to uplift audiences, and give a modern vitality and drive to the traditional music of South West England. Both are highly skilled workshop leaders, and part of the Wren Music team of folk educators. Workshops: 10am to 1pm for fiddlers, developing technique, skills and understanding. Afternoon: 2.30-5.30pm? for all instruments, developing repertoire from the Newfoundland tradition, and from Devon?s tradition (from William Andrew?s Tunebook), ending with a big play together. These workshops will be suitable for musicians with basic skill levels onwards. Handouts, scores, etc will be provided. There is a concert at 8pm.
