ANOTHER special event is due to take place in Tavistock next month in celebration of its 900th anniversary as a charter market town. One of a long programme of events commemorating the granting of Tavistock?s market charter, the Tavistock Market Photographic Exhibition, is being mounted in Tavistock Library and will be officially opened by town mayor Cllr Jenny Metcalf, on Monday October 3. The exhibition comprises images caught on camera by members of Tavistock Camera Club. Moira Andrews, events co-ordinator for Tavistock Charter Group, said: ?It will be a great exhibition. We are so lucky to have such a large number of photographs on view that really show that markets are alive and well and thriving, in Tavistock particularly. ?These photographs reinforce the view that Tavistock is the premier market town in England.? Cllr Iain Andrews, chairman of Tavistock Charter Group, said: ?Tavistock Camera Club has a proud history and has a dynamic and committed membership. It covers a very wide age range and includes whole families. ?One thing they all share is their love of photography and their skills and professionalism show in the high level of membership of the Royal Photographic Society, a qualification respected around the world.? The exhibition will continue for at least a week and will also include the results of a junior photographic competition held earlier this year in conjunction with the charter celebrations. In addition to the photographs, the Charter Cup will also be on display ? a new award for excellence which will be presented annually to the most deserving member of the camera club. Cllr Andrews said this perpetual challenge cup would be a lasting tribute to 900 years of Tavistock?s market charter. The photographic exhibition will open at 6.30pm on October 3 with a cheese and wine party, to which residents are invited.
