FRONTLINE staff across South Hams, West Devon and Teignbridge who are dealing with domestic abuse are being offered an opportunity to attend domestic violence bite-size workshops organised by the South Devon and Dartmoor Community Safety Partnership. At the first of the bite-size sessions, already fully subscribed and held in the South Hams District Council's headquarters in Totnes, Ziggy Gyles outlined the work of the charity Splitz, the Devon Domestic Abuse Support Service. She said: 'Every time there is a World Cup we get an increase in abuse. Whether England do well or not so well the abuse does tend to flare up. 'I don't know the statistics, but I know this from the helpline. 'People go out and drown their sorrows and then take it out on their families.' Her key message was to get over the work of the charity in providing support to those afflicted by violence — adults and children aged five to 16 — and the service they provide in helping sufferers and perpetrators get their lives back on track, through solicitors, housing officials, the police and child protection officials. Detective Sgt James Stock of the Devon and Cornwall Police Public Protection Unit stationed in Torquay outlined how officers from his unit dealt with abuse as first responders — and how they linked up with statutory and charitable support services, particularly over the care of children. Peter Dale, community safety and emergency planning officer, said: 'These are designed as taster sessions, since a lot of the people attending today will go on to further domestic abuse training.' Further sessions are being held next month in Okehampton Police Station and Old Forde House, Newton Abbot. These workshops are for front-line staff who may come across domestic violence in their day to day business such as health visitors, midwives, local authority officers, housing officers, benefits officers and housing associations, children centre staff, nurseries and community safety partners. Although many partners have attended domestic abuse training, these workshops provide a good opportunity to network with colleagues from other organisations.
