THERE were celebrations aplenty this month when Tavistock United Reformed Church held its very first ever same-sex marriage.

Catherine Peck and Ellie Spicer were joined by friends and family from around the country and supporters from the local congregation to declare their love for each other and swap marriage vows.

The Rev Rob Weston, who conducted the service, was delighted to see the level of support. He said: ‘We had to provide extra chairs, when we realised how many extra people were coming to share in this special occasion.’

The service included music led by Ellie’s father, who also encouraged Ellie to lead one of the worship songs during the service.

Mr Weston added: ‘The whole service was blessed with an atmosphere of joy and love. I feel certain that this special couple will be remembered in our thoughts and prayers for many, many years.’

Cat and Ellie were so pleased that Tavistock United Reformed Church was available for their wedding. When they first planned their marriage it looked as though a register office in Plymouth was their only option.

The couple said: ‘We are so grateful to the people of Tavistock United Reformed Church, they have enabled us to have the Christian wedding that we both desired.’

After their marriage, many people stayed in the church for refreshments and there were smiles all round. Cat and Ellie continued their celebrations a few days later, with a big reception.

There are a growing number of churches in Devon which are registered for same-sex marriages. They can be found online by searching ‘inclusive church’.
