AFTER a comfortable win against Devonshire, BATs Badminton Club were drawn away against YMCA Kitto in the semi-final of the Plymouth and District Badminton League?s Beckly Cup. With the Kitto Club playing club players rather than their team players, BATs knew the evening was going to be difficult in trying to get any consistency when it came to playing rallies and gaining points. David Williams and Abi Maunder again led the way with their play taking all six of their games and restricting the Kitto pairs to gathering up the few scraps that they were allowed. Once they had taken the most experienced pair apart in the first two games the other two pairs were left to watch in awe as David and Abi dominated play. As the evening continued one of the Kitto coaches was seen encouraging other Kitto players to watch the effective way in which David and Abi played and won their points. It was Steph Ferrera?s first match in the Beckly Cup this year and she and Jonathon Freeman won three of their games. Many of them were close but as a pair they contributed a lot of points towards the BATs points tally. Alan Berry and Rachael Williams found points difficult to come by, but fought hard for every point to record their highest Beckly Cup total this season. In each round the pair had improved their total which, if continued, will assist the team total in the final. At the end of the evening the points score was Kitto 191, BATs 161 with the all-important handicap to add on. The handicap awarded BATs 45 points so in the end BAT?s beat Kitto by 15 points to earn the right to play University in the final.
