WHEN Meavy Primary School?s very own Olympic flame ran its final lap last week it was in an arena every bit as new and grand as the ones being built in Greece ? and in time for the games.
After 25 years in the pipeline the school finally has its own level playing field which was opened on Friday by Cllr Mike Knight, chairman of Devon County Council.
He was accompanied by two former governors who devoted a lot of time and energy to the playing field project, Nicholas Waterhouse and Denise Bayly.
The field has been dedicated to the memory of Mrs Bayly?s late husband, Edward, a former chairman of governors at the school.
Headteacher Mary Williamson said: ?It was great to have them there ? they have put a lot of hard wok into this, and it is so good to see the children enjoying their new space.
?The LEA bought us the land after a 25 year wait, but it was on two levels so we had to wait a bit extra to get capital funding to even it out!
?Now it?s a beautiful site, perfect for all ages and sports, and very well used so far.?
Pupils recently undertook a challenge to run the distance to Athens in time for the Olympics, and they finished way ahead of schedule with pupils from reception to Year 6 completing the run with a lap of the new playing field.
The day was rounded off with a PTA barbecue in the school playground and plenty of former pupils and teachers turned up to try out the new field with a game of rounders
