AN exciting event which could bring thousands of people into Tavistock and put the town on the musical map is due to be worked up at a meeting in the town hall this month.

The musical festival is the brainchild of Stannary Brass director of music Peter Jones, and is a natural progression from his scheme to create a state-of-the-art community recording studio and rehearsal centre at Tavistock College.

He said he has already had a good response from people interested in the establishment of a music centre after an article in the Times in November.

?The idea of the meeting is to form a committee to take the music centre forward, but also to build towards a really big musical festival, to encompass all types of music, whether it?s showcasing local talent, folk groups, rock, country music ? something for everybody,? he said.

Peter said the aim would be to put on a weekend-long event, probably in the summer of 2005, using a variety of venues in the town including the Meadows, which would be the ideal stage for a ?party in the park?. The festival would include music to suit all ages and tastes, from classical to ultra-modern and at prices to suit all pockets.

He said many individuals and groups in Tavistock were already doing ?sterling work? in putting on musical events, such as the Tavistock Sings event last spring. The idea was to work together to put on a real crowd-pulling event in 18-month?s time ? and to build on it for the future.

He said the meeting on January 15 would be an ideal opportunity to bring together groups and individuals in the area who would not only be interested in the idea of a purpose-built musical centre, but also in performing and helping arrange the music festival.

Anyone who is interested in the music centre project or festival should come along to the meeting in the Rundle Room at the town hall at 7.30pm on January 15. For information, call Peter Jones on 07789 814796.
