AFTER 12 years of charity fundraising Lifton Fellowship has decided to discontinue its Sunday Morning worship services. Dennis Yorke and his wife Lilian, together with a few friends, started services at their home in Meadow Croft in January 1994 and decided the offerings should be given to charity. After Lifton Down Methodist closed, which they both attended, Mr and Mrs Yorke let the congregation use the spare room above their garage and the fellowship has been using it ever since. Mr Yorke said: ?During the years there were quite a lot of ministers and people from Plymouth and Bristol coming along on a Sunday morning as they were interested in what we were doing.? Services were held every Sunday ? a total of 646 took place during the 12 years, led by different ministers and preachers. Each year saw almost £2,000 being raised for charities such as; the Oncology Research Unit at Derriford, Leukaemia Research Fund, HeartSWell South West, and Devon Air Ambulance Trust. The total donated to charities in 2006 amounts to £1,200, and following the closure a further £200 has been donated. It was thought necessary to stop Sunday worship at the end of May due to Mrs Yorke?s failing health. Mr Yorke said: ?My wife will soon be 86 and I am 85, we just couldn?t keep on, it was a lot of work, but we enjoyed it and we felt it was a good cause.? The couple expressed thanks to those who have supported the services regularly and to the visitors.
